El Esparragal

El Esparragal is a small rural village located in the South of Córdoba, within the beautiful  Subbética National Park. Esparragal dates back to the 18th century.

Like other villages in the area of Priego de Córdoba, Esparragal takes its name from a plant. n the rainy season an abundance of asparagus, which are sought by people from surrounding provinces, can be found.

The surrounding rural landscapes are really worth seeing! To the North of Esparragal you will see the Sierra de El Esparragal, La Alcaide, which has a maximum height of 1070m. To the South there are two small mountains La Loma and La Torrecilla and behind the latter is the River Zagrilla.

Esparragal has Neolithic settlements from which different stone and flint axes and knives have been found. Its cave, “The call of the Badgers” later known as “Detritus”, is historically significant, and it is located on the Southeast side of the Torrecilla.

In addition, there are remnants of a Roman settlement, where you can see the ashlar of the Roman walls.

The Arab era really shaped Esparragal leaving behind a watchtower, Torre de Barcas, from the castle, Asbarragayra, located at the highest point of the Torrecilla. Another is located at the eastern end of the Sierra de El Esparragal.

The Christian era plunged El Esparragal into slavery, all the lands belonged to lords, and the people worked for the Duke of Medinaceli.

In the 1960s huge migration occurred swelling the 300 strong population to more than 1200, with many going without food.

Nowadays El Esparragal is an agricultural village surrounded by olive groves. The village has two quaint bars, a small local shop, a Padel court, outdoor sports area, its own primary school, doctor’s office and community centre.
